Behind the scenes at BioSAFE Engineering

Film crew delves behind the scenes at medical waste specialist’s facility

Our film team visited BioSAFE Engineering’s Indianapolis headquarters to capture a behind-the-scenes look at a partnership that has been quietly reshaping the medical waste sector in North America.

For more than a decade, BioSAFE has integrated UNTHA shredding technology into its industry-leading STI systems – helping operators meet strict regulatory requirements while improving reliability, lowering lifecycle costs, and strengthening their environmental footprint.

Chief Operations Officer Roland Kallechy welcomed the cameras onto the production floor, offering a candid look at how BioSAFE approaches system design for some of the most highly regulated waste streams in the world. From infectious biomedical material to complex laboratory waste, he explained why consistent throughput, predictable operating costs, and mechanical resilience are non-negotiable for BioSAFE customers, and how shredder performance plays a defining role in all three.

“Our customers operate under tight compliance windows,” Roland explained. “They can only store regulated waste for a limited amount of time, so uptime is everything. The equipment must run reliably, recover quickly, and deliver the same throughput every shift.”

During the shoot, our very own sales manager, Charlie Hildebrand shared his perspective on the collaboration from the shredder supplier’s side. With years of hands-on experience in medical waste applications, Charlie explained how UNTHA has helped BioSAFE and its customers reduce downtime and maintain consistent operations.

“Many BioSAFE customers purchase multiple shredder heads,” Charlie noted. “If maintenance is required, they simply swap the head and are back online within hours. It gives them resilience that most sectors don’t require – but this one absolutely does.”

If you haven’t seen the finished film, you can watch it now on YouTube – and step inside the BioSAFE–UNTHA partnership that’s helping reshape responsible medical waste treatment.
