Boardtek, based in Pontefract, England, relies on the UNTHA LR1400 waste wood shredder. It ensures smooth production processes and waste wood is quickly and efficiently recycled into biomass, which is used to produce heat in the company. This has also enabled the company to save around 100,000 euros in disposal costs.

Founded in 2011, Pontefract-based Boardtek is a manufacturer of MDF-based components for the furniture and DIY markets. Operating from its modern facility, which it shares with its parent company, EDB, the firm produces over 16,000m3 of high-quality MDF products each month.
With a dedicated team of 30, the company is committed to optimising production efficiency while minimising waste. And, despite monthly waste arisings of 608m3, Boardtek continually seeks innovative solutions to enhance sustainability in its operations.

The company struggled to maintain consistent operations with its previous shredder from an UNTHA competitor, which presented frequent breakdowns, jamming issues, and rapid wear of nylon guides. These persistent problems led to costly downtime, unreliable throughput, and increased maintenance expenses. Seeking a solution that would ensure reliable performance and reduce operational disruptions, Boardtek partnered with IMA Schelling – UNTHA Austria's sales partner – to invest in an LR1400 shredder from UNTHA.
REQUIREMENTS
High throughput capability
Robust and durable material handling
Machine durability
Ease of maintenance
Operator safety

The LR1400 handles approximately six tonnes of input materials per day, including 2.5mm to 25mm HDF, MDF, chipboard, and pallets – which are all by products of Boardtek’s production process.
Achieving a throughput of around 750kg per hour – although capable of much higher output when required – the machine reduces materials down to a 20mm particle size, ideal for subsequent use in the on-site biomass boiler. This function provides heat to the factory, paint line, and central heating system – enhancing energy efficiency while reducing the company’s reliance on external waste disposal methods.
Following a thorough vetting process, Boardtek selected the UNTHA shredder due to its high performance and reliability, as well as the company’s pristine reputation for quality, durability, and service. Since its installation, the machine ran without issues for over 18 months, significantly improving operational uptime, reducing maintenance costs, and enabling substantial energy savings. The company also opted for the service plan, to ensure peace of mind.
Purchasing the UNTHA shredder has been one of the best machinery purchases I’ve ever made. The reliability and performance of the machine is outstanding, and the support from UNTHA UK has been exceptional. The service plan has saved us significant time and money, with UNTHA engineers offering knowledge and support during every visit.
